'Bobs blobs' is a technique for painting a portrait in watercolor. This technique was proposed by the Australian painter Robert Wade, and developed in his book watercolor workshop handbook published in 2002 by 'International artist publishing'. This technique is also discussed on the following tutorial of the watercolour New-Zealand society web site.

I participated to a painting workshop organized by Nadine-Nacinovic in his beautiful atelier in Drôme, and we painted on the motif. I did some technical painting in order to better master colors: here is a two-pigment painting, ochre and cyan, with an ochre background:

In April, I did a travel a week long in Corsica, near L'Île Rousse. I painted some landscapes with watercolor in a small A4 sketch book that I've done myself, as described in my previous blog post Travel by bike. These watercolors are about 21x30cm and took about 1 hour each. I also draw quick sketches with a fineliner-pen, about 15x21cm and about 10' each of them. I first went in Algojola.

I did a two weeks long travel in Québec where I painted on the spot in a small A4 watercolor sketch book that I've done myself, as described in my previous blog post Travel by bike. I also did some sketches with a fineliner-pen. I stayed one week in Montréal where I admired the staircases in front of the houses.

Bavaria

During a bike travel in Bavaria with saddlebags and camping tent, I did some sketches with a fineliner-pen and also painted on the spot in a small A4 watercolor sketch book that I've done myself, as described in my previous blog post Travel by bike. I started from Mulhouse, progressed along the Rhein and joined the lake Constance.

Then, I reached Füssen where is the famous Neuschwanstein castel by by Ludwig II of Bavaria.

I then turned north on the Romantische Straße during about 400 kilometers. I was impressed by the old cities, some of them with buildings from medieval times: Augsburg, Nördlingen and Rothenburg.

I finally turned west, reached Heidelberg and next Strasbourg.

Pêcheur d'Islande

This painting is inspirated by the roman Pêcheur d'Islande by Pierre Loti (1886). More precisely, this painting illustrates a paragraph of chapter 8 in part 5 of this book: "Elle s'en allait toute seule à l'extrême pointe de ce pays de Ploubazlanec qui se découpe en corne de renne sur la Manche grise, et s'asseyait là tout le jour aux pieds d'une croix isolée qui domine les lointains immenses des eaux... Il y en a ainsi partout, de ces croix de granit, qui se dressent sur les falaises avancées de cette terre des marins, comme pour demander grâce ; comme pour apaiser la grande chose mouvante, mystérieuse, qui attire les hommes et ne les rend plus, et garde de préférence les plus vaillants, les plus beaux. [...] Et Gaud, assise au pied de sa croix, restait là, au milieu de ces tranquillités regardant toujours, jusqu'à la nuit tombée, jusqu'à ne plus rien voir". La liseuse

The reference of the first painting, the nude, is nu lisant by Isaac Israëls (near 1900). The reference of the second painting, the portrait, is la liseuse by Auguste Renoir (1876): the original painting could be observed at Orsay museum in Paris. Palette and color-chart

To mix my acrylic colors as I want, I must have a basic and well balanced set of pigments, and I must know what will happen when I mix them together. So, during a long weekend, I decided to paint a color-chart for better understanding and mastering colors. I first defined my palette with twelve colors:

In the second column, I indicated the official pigment symbol. The number in the last column is the index in the Winsor Newton acrylic catalog. I then started my first color-chart: I followed the book Alla prima by Richard Schmid, page 130. Note that this book is now feely available for downloading

In each column of the color-chart, I first used each color as it came from the rube, and then lightened by adding some titanium white. I first observed that there was redundancies in my first palette: the cerulean blue is very close to the phthalo blue: it could simply be obtained by adding some white in the later. Also, the three earth (Sienna, Umber, Ocre) could be easily obtained by mixing others colors. Moreover, the earth colors are drab while the equivalent color obtained by mixing is often better. So, I simplified my palette, reducing it to eight colors.

The previous graphics represents my initial palette on the left and the reduced one on the right. The color circle use a polar representation with the hue as angle and the chroma as radius. I used the CIECAM data base provided by Bruce MacEvoy and the gnuplot free software to realize the plots. Note that the colors are better distributed in the new version of the palette.

Next I continued to follow the book Alla prima by Richard Schmid, page 130: for each color, I realized a similar chart, but by mixing each color with all the others, while the initial color should be predominant. I obtained eight charts, each of them having height columns. After doing that, I better understood what happens when mixing colors of my palette together.

Lovagny

At the end of April, Clematis opened on my balcony: I was so happy that I did a painting of one flower. Next, I did a travel to Lovagny, close to Annecy in Savoy, and visited the family. I also painted a chalet.

Corsica

In April, I did a travel a week long in Corsica. I first visited Bonifacio in the south of the island. I painted a view of its famous houses above the sea with watercolor in a small A4 sketch book that I've done myself, as described in my previous blog post Travel by bike.

Next, I went to the north of the Corsica island in L'Île Rousse. These watercolors are about 21x30cm and took about 1 hour each. I also prepared some postal cards, about 10x15cm, that I sanded to family and friends:

When walking in the maquis shrubland, I also draw quick sketches with a fineliner-pen, about 15x21cm and about 10' each of them. I visited a small portion of the GR 20 footpath that started in Conca crosses the island. I also walked in the Agriate, with scenic views over the sea and smell of flowering maquis in spring.

Monochrome still-life

Here are two still-life studied at l'ESAD. The first one is a teapot, essentially monochrome, with touches of red for the fire.

The second one is a monochrome reinterpretation of Nature morte au pain painted in 1927 by Maurice Vlamink, and that is exposed in Musée d’Art moderne de Paris.

Athens

In september, I did a travel a week long in Athens. I first visited the Acropolis and painted on the spot both the Parthenon and the Caryatid porch of the Erechtheion with watercolor in a small A4 sketch book that I've done myself, as described in my previous blog post Travel by bike.

Next, I went to the archaeological museum and discovered Mycenaean fresco of Tiryns. I was so impressed that I reproduce some of them. The previous woman portrait is my watercolor reproduction of the original, done between 1400 and 1200 BC, which is now in this museum. A photography of it is available here.

I also reproduced some fresco from Akrotiri. The following spring fresco dates from 1600-1500 BC.

I was very impressed by the style and freedom of these artists of the ancient Greece. Similaryly, the young boxers, from the same period:

On the hiking trail near Paimpol

Back from a travel in Brittany with lots of photos and beautiful scenery deep in the eyes, I started oil painting, more precisely a water-soluble oil.

This landscape is near Paimpol, on the hiking trail, the famous GR34, the former customs path. I was more confident with acrylic and I was surprised that I took long time to dry. So, I continue alla prima, with a with a thick layer of paint: I took about one month to be dry.

Brittany

I was in July in Brittany: I painted watercolors on the spot. I was in Plouescat and Loguivy, near Paimpol:

During this travel, I used a small A4 sketch book that I've done myself, as described in my previous blog post Travel by bike. I fixed here to finish each watercolor in about one hour. Next, I visited Roscoff and Meneham:

In Roscoff, I decided to send postcards that I would have made myself: on an A4 sheet, I included four of them, so cards are in A6 format. I fixed to finish each card in about 15mn.

Today, at l'ESAD, I worked on a sepia portrait. I chooses a portrait of Gustave Courbet: the links shows an original black-and-white photography due to Etienne Carjat, 1867. Yan Pei-Ming, a contemporary painter living in France, interpreted this photography in 2019: observe here his painting, which is monochrome in blue. My interpretation is also monochrome, but sepia:

During the all saints holiday, I travel to Belle-Ile-en-Mer, in Brittany: I paint some watercolors on the spot.

Back in Grenoble after a travel during the holidays, I continued watercolor sketches from the quais and river bridge.

Then, I visited my family in the Alps, first in Lovagny where there live in a chalet and then in Novalaise where they restored an old farm.

Travel by bike

During a bike trip with saddlebags and camping tent, I painted on the spot some watercolors of the scencic landscapes of the south of France. I left Grenoble, joined the via Rhôna and I then, reached Saint-Agrève and later, Rodez:

I drew fitst a quit sketch using a fineliner-pen and then introduced the watercolors. I used a small A4 sketch book that I've done myself with some watercolor paper, a cardboard sheet for the back, a transparent slide for the top and a a string for the binding. As for sketches in less than 10mn, I fixed here to finish each watercolor in about one hour.

Going back, I stopped few days in Die:

This is a charming small town circled by Gallo-Roman city walls:
